In my endeavour to lose weight, get fit and generally feel better I’ve had to learn and re-learn a few things. For some (many) these are going to be obvious but for some reason I haven’t been paying them the attention they require and yet, when I do “wake up and smell the coffee” the simplicity is almost unbearable!
As the FBH heads off for a 3 day break I will be here, alone, with two teenagers, by myself, did I mention … alone?
Well you get the idea. I began to realise what I need to do to maintain my health and fitness regime without the support of the FBH.
So I thought I’d summarise for my own benefit what I am going to have to do to ensure I don’t fall off the wagon again like I have done this past week.
P - Plan: It is so obvious that I have to plan ahead to get to where I want to go. It applies to all aspects of life and in particular me this week. Plan my diet, plan my exercise, plan my work activities, plan what I’ll read and plan when I can go to bed to get the right amount of rest so I can do it all again the next day.
S - Support: this is what I haven’t realised the value of in the past few weeks. Having people (family) around me being a cheer squad. Every time I have a weight in they are almost as keen to know the result as I am. If I give myself time to think on that it really is very valuable. Having people around you to cheer you on, encourage you to keep going is so underrated and so necessary (almost inversely proportional).
E- Execution: I have to execute the plans I have made. As David Allen from GTD fame says: “write it all down, get it out of your head” so I have to list the things I plan to do this week that I might take for granted from the FBH. No execution, no result. (duh!)
R - Review: I plan to review each day what I have done. Go over my list and determine how well I executed the plan for the day. Only I will know how earnestly I participated in my own day (do you ever have days where you exist in your own world but refuse to play?) This review will help me determine the effort for the next day.
SO - Start Over: Each day is a new day. I can’t change the day before. I can only change as I go forward. So each day is a new start. An opportunity to execute the plan and to execute enthusiastically.
I think I just needed to write this post to get things clear in my own mind. I am sure anyone reading this will realise it all as common sense. But, I guess, it’s all about creating new habits and you will see from my exercise log to the right that there has been a distinct lack of exercise this week. Therefore the habit is not created … yet.
But today is a new day and I PLAN to EXECUTE a good run/walk and then REVIEW the results afterwards!
I hope your week is going well.

That’s a great plan Bill. Stick with that and you’ll see results for sure.
