Day 98b – Garmin’s First Run

by Bill Wallace on July 13, 2008

Woohoo!

First run with my new toy and I am impressed! Still have to work out the gadgets and readings and stuff but really it was turn it on, find the satellites (just one of the 1001 things I will do before I die – find satellites!) and hit the “START” button.

Couldn’t be simpler!

I also thought I’d update my monthly progress. You’ll see I’ve only exercised 3 times in 13 days. Yikes! Some work to do to hit my 100km goal.

And after a bit of a hiatus in any exercise I feel I’m back on track.

First 5km Race on July 27

I’ve registered for my first race on July 27. There is a 10km race on the same day but thought I’d better start slow and just get a race in.

Questions to my fellow runners:

  • any tips on running a first race?
  • is it better to follow someone or just run your own race? (I think I remember Andrew mentioning he followed a clown in one race! :)   )
  • does running in a race help in your own time by “default”?
  • should I not run a day or two before the actual race?

Back to the Garmin for a sec …

I’ll get up to speed with what this baby does and hopefully post some more details directly from the readings later.

Try using software like Sporttracks with it. You’ll get the snazzy maps etc.

Tips for running races:

1. Enjoy it. Don’t eat much before it. Don’t start too fast. Keep to your target pace rather than sprinting out the blocks like most people do.
2. Run your own race but use the people around you to help keep your pace up.
3. Adrenalin is your friend. I’ve always run faster in a race than I have in training. The crowd sort of pulls you along.
4. I never run the day before a race.

Hey Andrew! Thanks for the advice. I’ll try and keep to it. The main thing that I want to do is enjoy it. As it’s only 5k it’ll be over before I know it. :)

Damn! Sporttracks looks good but is PC based, not Mac! :( Looks great software though. I’ll have a browse for Mac software that does the same thing.
