12 Days to Triathlon – FTI

by Bill Wallace on February 24, 2009

Tuesday: plan to swim another kilometre but work gets in the way. Leave the office at 5:50pm, phone call from colleague till 6:20pm, drop by daughter’s new flat to see how her renovations are going. Get home just before 7pm … no swim!

Oh well, I was feeling a little weary from the previous 2 days of learning to swim. Probably good to have a rest day.

I’ve found two things work against me when learning to swim:

  1. The number of people in the pool after work. There are loads of them and, as I am not a confident swimmer, it isn’t as easy to find a spare lane where I can concentrate on my style and not disrupt others. This prevents the learning from being as effective as it could be.
  2. I find the kicking part of the swim quite tiring, which is interesting as I would have thought my leg muscles would be okay with the running I am doing. I’m thinking it’s more technique than strength. Must learn to focus on technique.

Daughter dutifully came down after work yesterday to provide Dad with tips and I am sure she is telling me to do the right thing. The problem being my FTI – Failure to Implement. I am hoping my desire to learn will see me get to the point of complete frustration fairly quickly. I have learnt through Robert Kiyosaki that, just as you are about to “throw your bike in the bush”, something amazing happens and things start to “click”. All of a sudden you can do what you thought was impossible.

Learning to Ride a Motorbike

I did this when gaining my motorbike licence. I was trying to do “O-turns” and I couldn’t get it right. I was getting extremely frustrated and was about to tell my instructor “Let’s go home.” He sensed this and told me to “ride it off”, go for a ride to get it out of my system and then come back and we’d go again. Fine! Off I went, but to my dismay, I did an O-turn to begin the ride! I didn’t realise until I came back and my instructor pointed it out.

I’d stopped trying and just did it! And it worked.

Okay, long story but my point being I can’t give up now as I may be at the point of “getting it”.

I’ll let you know. :)

Good job learning to swim! Now you can go to the beach and go snorkeling and it will all be worth it!
