Average to … Below???

by Bill Wallace on September 1, 2009

I have a confession to make! I am, er, going backwards in my mission. I am, according to the City to Surf Results … below average.

How is THAT for a slap around the head with a wet fish???

According to the official race results here is how I did:

  1. 6,505th out of 12,374 finishers (48th %ile) – Last year: 3,575th
  2. 906th out of 1,409 in my 40 – 49 age group (36th %ile) – Last year: 620th
  3. 4,096th out of 7,380 of all males (33rd %ile) – Last year: not sure

Oh dear!

But, onwards and upwards. My World Running League team mates (Go Team 8!) will be slightly dispirited by the anchor in the team but hopefully they haven’t found the blog yet! :)

Diet starts today as does my marathon training – 3 mile run tonight, tomorrow and Thursday according to Hal Higdon’s Novice 1 program. Basically a 5km run. My son says he’ll do it with me so we’ll see where he is tonight when the time comes.

I’ve been looking through my posts from this time last year and I think I was around 80 kgs at the time of the City to Surf so the extra 4 – 5 kgs would have made a difference. It was good to review how I was thinking and what I was going through 12 months ago just to see the difference.

So, I’ll report in on my marathon training AND the OFFICIAL first race of the World Running League (we really need an echo on that! :) )

Talk soon and I hope your week goes well.

Bill

I wouldn’t worry too much about going backwards. You were there and that beats all those folks who never made it to the starting line.

As they say dead last beats DNF which beats DNS.

You need to look at it a different way. Include in your statistics all those people who didn’t even bother to get out of bed, or who were lounging around with a latte while your were out running the race. I’m sure then you’ll be up in the 99th percentile!
