Happy Father’s Day to everyone in those countries celebrating it today. And to those in other countries who celebrate it at different times, well wishes to you anyway.
Saturday: The Hal Higdon Marathon Training Novice Program
Yesterday was my 6 mile (10km) run for Week 1 of the plan.
The day was wild and woolly but I have committed to this and, 10km is 10 km and if it takes me 50 minutes or an 1 hour 20 mins, it’s still done right? Right! Plus the Pearl Izumi site says you can tell who the real runners are by those who still go out when Mother Nature is chucking a hissy fit!
Go me!
Slight diversion follows:
Let me just slip this in and get it out of the way. I follow Carlton in the AFL and for all those who follow the AFL you know what happened. If you don’t follow Carlton it was probably the sweetest loss you will ever see. If you do follow Carlton, it ended a crappy day! Okay, done! No more football talk!
Back to the run. Grabbed the iPhone, started it up and off I went, happily listening to an old 80′s song (Dancing in the City; Marshall and Haine), next song started, pace was good, feeling okay, wind behind me at this point.
Oh Dear 1
Also had my Polar watch and HRM hooked up. This was the first thing that wasn’t good, no heart rate. Apparently I was dead! Did whatever I could to get the link happening. No luck. No problem, just use the stopwatch function to check timings. Look at Polar … dead! (glad it wasn’t me!) A bit weird though as I had just had the battery changed and for those who have a Polar in Australia you generally send it away to a place in South Australia. So it’s not just a case of going to your local watch shop! Oh dear!
Oh Dear 2
No problem, keep up the pace. I had been running for a bit (10 mins?) and there was no “1km completed” from the iPhone. Check iPhone “o km completed” it tells me. What the? It was probably more like 2.5 kms but I hadn’t hit the right button at the start (I assume). Oh dear.
I am now running into the wind and the failure of the technology is left me a little dispirited (doesn’t take much but I like to know how I’m doing!) plus the bloody wind doesn’t help. I think I got more air into my lungs whether I wanted it or not! LOL
So, I get to about he half way mark, fix the technology and decide to just run a song, walk a song, finishing off by walking the last 2 – 3 kms.
So week 1 is done of the Novice program and what started well finished, well, tragically.
Today (Sunday) – Father’s Day ![]()
The Children made me breakfast in bed today so I have to walk that off: poached eggs, beans, tomato, bacon and mushrooms on toasted Italian bread. Absolutely delish!
Got a new pair of slippers (Grosby’s!
) I now fully realise my age as slippers were what I wanted and I thought (when I was younger) that you only give slippers when you can think of nothing else!
The FBH was going to make corned beef tonight but I think I’ll have that another day! Breakfast alone will see me through the day I think.
I have an hour of cross training today which will be a walk with the FBH and the dog! It looks like the wind has died right down and the sun is out so it’ll be a pleasant day.
This post has become very long. Sorry about that folks.
