World Running League (WRL) – Race 1

by Bill Wallace on September 1, 2009

Running_1Tomorrow is the first real race of the newly formed World Running League.

For information on what it’s about you can go here (this is the guidelines for each race and how it works). I found after my C2S last year I didn’t have any real goals expect the triathlon in the following March, which I think was too far away to prepare for. Anyway, my training fell away, my weight returned and here I am … kind of back to what I was … fitter, yes, but not “fit” – if you know what I mean.

Too Much Technology

So while I was reviewing all my technology (nike+, Garmin 305, Nokia Sports Tracker, Nokia N95 8gb, Polar watch & HRM yada, yada, yada …) I found this World Running League on the nike+ forum.

Set up by Dave who goes by the username Building429 (no idea, must ask him), it is an 8 week season of 20 teams who compete by running and uploading only their nike+ data. Teams compete against each other (3 in a team, I am in team 8 ) and if we run more miles/km than our competitors between Wednesday and Friday, we score 3 points (0 for running less and 1 point each if miles/km are the same).

For me, this is great because I have a team to support, there are 3 days where I “have” to run and that keeps me out there. Dave is great at updating stats (Team Scores for “pre-Season” are here) and you get a leaderboard for yourself and your team.

Clearly there are some great and experienced runners out there so I have a challenge ahead of me and I need to be careful not to over do it. Still, it’s a goal and if it gets me running more and better, I can only benefit.

Dave has done a great job so far and I was thinking of how much effort goes into something like this and I have to say, it’d do my head in.

Weekly Updates

I’ll post my results here and you scan see how I’m doing. (I think the 2.8 miles listed on the page against Team 7 is mine which means we won!! :) )
