Race 1 – Matilda Bay

by Bill Wallace on January 24, 2010

Race 1 of my 1 race per month was today.

The races are organised by the WA Marathon Club which does a great job. Driving to the venue around 6:15am and all the “event” signs were up and witches hats were out. Not sure if it was a great turn out but I think over 200 participted and it really inspires the healthy lifestyle seeing so many families and body shapes all out to do the run.

The plan was to run the 10k but being as warm as it was when the opportunity came to take the short cut to the 4k I took it. Not sure what happened but I think it was the temperature that hit me. It must have been 26C at 7am and even through I tried to keep my pace low and breathe properly I was struggling after just 2k’s. According to my Garmin 305 my pace was around a fast jog, slow run which wasn’t the plan. I must learn to run slower, just as a discipline if nothing else. My average heart rate was 161 and my max was 185! Clearly  don’t now how to run slowly. I know the Garmin has a training mode to keep within HR Zone 1. Must try and do that this week.

(I think it is also my half assed routine which will get a re-jig this week. :) )

Anyway, it felt good afterward and, as 4ks is hardly a work out, I’ll be off on a 6k  run tonight. I’ll practice my slow jogging and see how I go.

Matilda Bay in Perth is an awesome venue too, parklands, yacht clubs and views to the city. Couldn’t have been better.

The other good thing about a race or just exercise is the endorphins that kick in and leave you feeling great after the run. Something you I don’t always feel during the run. :)

Race summary

  • Distance: 4k
  • Time: 22:38
  • Pace: 5:38/km

Next week is a race at Bold Park which is a cross country run and while I hadn’t planned to race next week, what the heck!! :)

This week is also Week 2 of the Hal Higdon Marathon Training program.

Yeah Bill you’re right, there is something pretty special about being out with a large group of like-minded people exercising! Nothing beats it!
