Running Fatigue or Just a Barrier to Push Through

by Bill Wallace on February 11, 2010

Recently I have been learning to run more consistently.

This has meant keeping to the Hal Higdon Marathon Training program better and I have notice my maximum heart rate lowering. Probably too early to draw any real conclusions but one thing I notice is my tiredness, probably not fatigue.

To those who have started this running regime over the past few years is this something you experienced? Is this the time to keep running or have a rest for a few days? (I’d rather not rest!)

I’d rather keep running and view this as a physical hurdle of my body getting used the increase in regular exercise. I can’t remember this happening a couple of years ago when I started and was training for my first City to Surf, but I am 2 years older :)

Any advice people can offer would be good. I understand you’re not doctors or fitness experts, just looking to learn from your experience! :)

Thanks in advance!

Bill

If your weekly mileage is increasing, then tiredness is going to be a symptom. I found that as I ramped up mileage last fall for my marathon training I slept more and ate more. I don’t specifically remember tiredness in general though.

You may just need to do something to make the training more exciting. Find a running group to join once a week or so. Try some new routes and/or get some new music.

There is a running podcast you may enjoy and may give you some needed motivation. Search for “Two Gomers” on iTunes. They started with half marathon training in fall of 2008, completed that and are now training for a full. They are novice runners and pretty funny to listen to.

Personally I keep running unless I really tired but you need to listen to your own body. It’s normally better to rest rather than tempt fate.

Mmm, good points, thanks guys. I do know of a running group so I’ll try that and see how I go. I rather not eat more cause I want to lose weight but perhaps I need to look more at what I’m eating. Going through massive change at work too so that may be a factor. 14km run tomorrow morning so i will see how I feel after that.

    Appreciate the feedback and advice.

    Thank you
